How To Style Vintage Decor

vintage design

'Retro' refers to something that imitates the graphic design style of a recent period. The word stems from the French word rétro (short for rétrograde), which means 'backward' or 'behind'. Similarly, avoid a vintage design if there’s no nostalgia for your product/industry. Choosing a vintage design is a deliberate choice, and if there’s nothing to be gained by playing with nostalgia in your design, the design will just feel pointless.

Mid-Century Modern Graphic Design & Pop Art

One of the more confusing things to understand when it comes to historical-inspired design is the retro vs. vintage style distinction. Everybody has an idea of what looks ‘old’, but when and where you were born can influence your perspective. The way you perceive something as appearing ‘vintage’ or ‘old-fashioned’ is conditioned by three factors—nostalgia, perception of age, and visual style. When you’re looking for the right font for your vintage design, think about the technology in use during the era you’re calling back to. If you’re going for a certain look, you have to play by that look’s design rules. Research designs in that style and pay attention to color palettes, fonts and construction.

The core principle of this style is “form follows function,” making typography a core element of this style. From Gothic art to 1950s graphic design, mid-century illustration to vintage 70s graphic design, there's something to inspire every design enthusiast. When you think of the term ‘retro’, you might well picture a 1950s design style in your head. ‘Mid-Century Modern’ is the term design historians use to describe this distinctive style, which was incredibly popular in the 1950s and 1960s across design and architecture. Victoriana refers to a design style that takes inspiration from the period 1837 to 1901, when Queen Victoria was on the British throne. If you were born in the Eighties, this decade might have a more nostalgic quality for you as this is the decade when you were a child.

Seriously—you could get dizzy combing through the many racks of this amazing store, which is situated in a gilded, Baroque-inspired space that makes the experience feel that much more authentic. Tulle dresses, beaded blouses, chiffon costumes, cocktail gowns—you name it, Playclothes has it. Having graduated with a first class degree in English Literature, Holly started her career as a features writer and sub-editor at Period Living magazine, Homes & Gardens' sister title. Working on Period Living brought with it insight into the complexities of owning and caring for period homes, from interior decorating through to choosing the right windows and the challenges of extending.

Vintage themes from different time periods can provide completely different visual properties and techniques to play with. Steampunk is a relation of Victoriana, taking inspiration from 19th-Century industrialisation and technologies and merging this with sci-fi and post-apocalyptic cultural references. When you’re designing something that looks like it belongs in the Victorian era, you’re not going to use 3D graphics and high-res photographs; you’re going to use embossing, sepia tones and delicate details. When nostalgia’s done right, it reminds consumers of happier times in their lives, like when they were children or young adults with fewer responsibilities.

At its height during the nineties, the grunge style is cool, angst-ridden, and laid-back. Graffiti, sombre colors, and dirty textures have come to characterize the style for contemporary designers. One of the most recent of styles that can be considered ‘vintage’, grunge, like punk, is inspired by the music and fashion scene of the same name. It also has connections with the Motorbike/Heavy Metal design style, which takes punk elements and incorporates them into tattoo-inspired logos and typefaces. Compared to more classical styles that came before it, Art Deco looks intentionally more modern.

Find the right balance between vintage and modern

Often, this kind of design is used to evoke a sense of the late 19th or early 20th century. Badges and stamps look like they’ve literally been stamped onto paper, a throwback to the days when graphic images were created with carved wood and rubber.

I know that some designers want the entire home to have the same aesthetic, but I think that rooms can have different energies and still feel cohesive through other design elements. The 1970s were filled with many cultural shifts and movements influenced by graphic design. People expressed themselves freely through fashion, music, and art.

Your Vaporwave design might use pixelated text or a fabulously neon 80s font. Your letterpress design would use a font that looks like it was made with an old-fashioned printing press. Do some research on fonts used in actual designs in the era to find inspiration for your perfect font. The primary reason to go with a vintage-inspired design is to evoke nostalgia. When consumers are familiar with a product and fondly look back on their relationship with it, a vintage design is a way to capitalize on that relationship. It’s heavy blocks of color and text overlaid on each other that often creates an effect that feels like you’re looking at a 3D picture.

Inspired by the punk music scene of the late 1970s and 1980s, the punk style is anarchic and attention-grabbing. A daring and divisive retro graphic design style, punk broke all the rules and refashioned them in a haphazard and confrontational way. Newspaper collages, hand-written typography, and clashing neon color palettes took their aesthetic cues from the grittiness and noise of punk music gigs and the safety-pin-strewn outfits of punk fans.

The vintage decorating style was once a nostalgic look back at chintzy designs and was designed to create a cosy, nostalgic look. For 2021, it has had a more modern update and doesn't just incorporate rustic, blowsy and country-style decor, but also includes more contemporary designs such as in the Retro Revival trend. Of all the vintage designs, Mid-Century Modern is the most popular. It's so viral, experts like Laura Fenton had to question "why the world is obsessed with midcentury modern design."

Each section is discussed in detail so that you come away understanding all of the components that will go into designing  your space. The 1980s were full of crazy hairstyles, Lycra leggings, wild patterns, and vibrant colors—a truly eye-catching era. This decade was largely defined by modern technology, along with futuristic fonts, an explosion of pop culture, and angular patterns. This abstract design trend will be back as an important style technique used by designers for magazines and in plenty of marketing, packaging, and inspired designs. The artwork is inspired by the psychedelic movement filled with fluid shapes, hand-drawn typography, vibrant neon colors, and dream-like themes with no negative space.

To replicate the groovy vibe, here are some iconic 70s retro styles this year. The psychedelic movement brought a whole new inspiration to artwork. The 60s, heavily influenced by mind-altering hallucinogenic drugs, became popular and emerged as the “psychedelic style,” soon seen spanning movies, art, fashion, and music.
